Kilt Sporran

Aren't kilts supposed to stop above the knee?
Our family is going to a 'highland' style wedding reception this weekend and everyone's been asked to dress up in Scottish type clothing. My mum found that she could buy a cheaper type kilt from a Scottish type clothing store in a nearby town than actually rent a formal male kilt (a LOT cheaper.) It's not like it has to be a real kilt type thing with the sporran and all that, but when I tried on the kilt she got me, it was longer than I thought it would be - like it came down to about mid-shin in length. I thought kilts always stopped above the knee. Are there longer kilts too?
Also, I don't see any belt loops. How do you keep it up if it's loose? My mum thinks maybe I need to have the next waist size down, but that would be a bit tight I think too.
TIA
Adam
The kilts I have seen were at or below the knee. I don't think the men wear them short. Here is a link to a site that sells things like that:

When my son got married, they wanted Celtic style, and thought about the kilts but decided against it because they were so expensive. Instead, the men in the wedding part wore formal wear like regular suits, and we ordered fly plaids in the family tartan, and broaches from Scotland. It was very attractive. You could do something like that if your kilt doesn't fit or you don't feel comfortable wearing it.
A fly plaid is the strip of tartan material that drapes over the shoulder, and is very attractive, but not overly cumbersome.
